Minutes from previous meeting approved – the following action points were noted:
Dan Thomas (Film Agency for Wales) sent the group an update via e mail to Karen Roberts. Network Members have been invited to an event at Cineworld (Cardiff) on 25/4/08 Action: KR to circulate details by e mail
Alexandra McNair has now moved to a new job, so the Media Literacy Matters website will be taken forward by a new member of staff who will be invited to the next meeting. Action: KR to invite appropriate member of staff to meeting
Martin O’Neill updated the group on the Convergence bid which he is submitting to WEFO

Karen Roberts updated partners on Ofcom’s response to the Byron Review which has now been published.

Update on Campaigns & Promotions which have been promoting media literacy to education & training sector: Adult Learners Week (May) is the current focus.
Latest Info/Exchange
Tim Hartley (S4C) informed the network of a forthcoming visit to Northern Ireland to discuss media literacy. Also informed group of events being planned for the National Eisteddfod which is in Cardiff this year. There was a possible slot for a media literacy network event on 6th August. Action: CF to follow up with TH about booking space/time for an event
Tom Barrance (Media Education Wales) updated the group on a number of current projects:
- Mediaed.org.uk- Media Education website aimed at teachers which has recently being re-launched.
- Film2School project in Briton Ferry- Children making films, but also increasing teacher’s media literacy
- Annual course for film & media studies teachers
Alun Burge suggested linking with ‘CyberZone’ in Briton Ferry
Elise Stewart mentioned some digilabs in Neath Port Talbot which may be of interest to Tom.
Elise Stewart (Canllaw Online) updated the group about a digital storytelling conference on June 3/ 4 in Aberystwyth. For all people involved in digital storytelling, and including international speakers.
Canllaw’s current WEFO bid is going through the processes- this builds on the work of the digilabs. Action: KR to circulate.
Alun Burge (Communities @ One) updated the group on activities:
- Communities @ One conference held four weeks ago- included workshops for older people, and involved community groups etc.
- Currently bidding for Convergence/ Competitiveness
- In process of winding down projects for Objectives 1 & 3
Martin O’Neil (Merthyr Media Project) updated network:
- Merthyrstories.org.uk is supported by Communities@One- mostly targeting over 50s. Has now been running for nearly five years.
- Have secured funding through the monies set aside following the Graham Review Widening Access Fund to keep the project going until the outcome of Convergence bid is known. Following discussion at last Network meeting, significant changes were made to the Project Information Form, which is now on the WEFO website.
- Lots of work done on evaluating the impact of work
- Skillset currently developing a Convergence bid, with University of Glamorgan as a key partner. Action: MO to send evaluation reports to CF
Shone Hughes updated the network on ITV Wales activities including attendance at the Royal Welsh Show.
Event at Aberystwyth. Karen Roberts and Merris Griffiths briefed the group about the proposals for a Network event on Digital Literacy at the University of Aberystwyth. Action: KR to circulate invitations and more details closer to the event.
Reviewing the Terms of Reference:
The network discussed Committee Memberships, and the non-attendance of some members. Action: KR to e mail all members who have not attended for 12 months and ask if they would still like to be members
Action: CF and KR to review terms of reference and circulate for comment.
Report from PR sub-group:
- Need to develop the Action Plan before developing the PR & Press strategy
- Once Action Plan developed this should be cross-checked against individual organisation plans/ actions
Develop an Action Plan for going forward- this should be linked to Ofcom’s strategy and WAG’s objectives. Initial ideas for Action Plan included:
- Theme of ENGAGEMENT- Widening Access to media Literacy
- Identifying barriers and challenges (including review of existing evidence, for example by Welsh Consumer Council)
- Need to understand people’s behaviour
- Critical understanding of messages
- Need to have clear outcomes (e.g. basic skills)
- Must build monitoring and evaluation into action plans
- Must be relevant to groups- what is the hook?
- Members of the Committee to be responsible for points on Action Plan
Action: KR to draft and circulate to Committee Members for comment
