Ofcom update.

Karen Roberts  provided members with an update on Ofcom’s response to the Byron Review and its recommendations for online labelling. Sangeet Bhular wanted to know how Ofcom’s labelling is different from ICRA’s proposals. Action: KR to update Sangeet.

Media Literacy Matters website: Further stalled due to end of secondment from DCMS. Role has been taken over by Alexandra McNair. Some technical problems still experienced. Site should be launched in spring. Action: KR to Invite Alex to next meeting to give presentation of site

NIACE Dysgu Cymru update.

Essex reported on NIACE work in media literacy and events planned for the year ahead with specific focus on Adult learner’s Week in May and the various Learning Festivals across each LA area. £3,000 is being given to each group to create bite-size activities.

Items  on the agenda were switched around as some members had to leave early.

Latest issues: information exchange/ updates from network members  Updates were given by Committee members and the latest issues in each organisation were discussed.

Members were encouraged to attend the following events :-

  • Sesh.TV – 14th/15th Feb, Aberystwyth (Fresh Festival)
  • Communities@One conference on 14 March in Cardiff.
  • Digital Storytelling conference in Aberystwyth 5/6 June

Convergence and Competitive Funding

Martin O’Neill gave Members a presentation on the University of Glamorgan’s proposals for Convergence and Competitive Funding “Media Skills for South Wales”.  Members welcomed and appreciated the enormity of the project but felt that it needed to be more focus in terms of geographical spread and target audience. It was also felt that some of the threads within the project were already happening; that it was imperative not to duplicate what’s already going on and to compliment existing projects such as Canllaw’s Gwireddu project. Members also wanted to know how these proposals fitted in with the Assembly’s strategy. The network could offer support in future. Action: Martin to keep network updated on progress.

Dates for the next meetings (coming year) were agreed as follows:-

  • April 10th
  • July 3rd
  • October 2nd
  • January 15th 2009

Meetings will be held in Caspian Point at 10.00am unless stated otherwise.

Separate sub-groups were created to deal with specific issues going forward:

  • PR Strategy sub-group
  • Website sub-group – Sangeet also suggested setting up an e-group

Action: KR to arrange membership and meetings accordingly and report back to group

Other Issues

The meeting ran over and Members had to leave so no other issues were discussed.
